‘Bhai-Dooj’ horror: Maha hospital fire 11 leaves 11 dead, probe ordered
At least 11 people, mostly Covid patients, were killed, and six other injured, some seriously, as fire swept through the ICU of Ahmednagar Civil Hospital on the auspicious ‘Bhai-Dooj’ day on Saturday, officials said.
The massive blaze engulfed the hospital, creating a huge panic among patients and staffers, with thick black smoke emanating from the ward.
“The fire broke out around 10 a.m. Of the 17 patients undergoing treatment in the ICU ward, 10 have died and the rest are injured,” District Collector Dr. Rajendra B. Bhosale told media persons earlier this afternoon.
The toll subsequently rose to 11, with another injured victim succumbing.
As the flames quickly spread to different wards, the hospital authorities, aided by locals and rescue teams, managed to shift many patients to safer locations as a precaution, Bhosale added.
He said the victims’ bodies have been sent for autopsy to determine the exact causes of their death and further procedures will be followed thereafter.
A grim Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered a probe into the incident and has directed the district authorities to submit their preliminary report within a week.
He also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of each deceased – a majority of whom were Covid-19 patients.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis and others expressed grief over the tragedy, while Union Minister of State for Health Bharati P. Pawar is visiting Ahmednagar for a spot assessment of the situation.
Ahmednagar Guardian Minister Hasan Mushrif and Health Minister Rajesh Tope said a detailed probe has been ordered into the tragedy and warned that those responsible for the lapses would not be spared.
At the time of the incident, there were at least 17 patients, the majority said to be senior citizens, undergoing Covid-19 treatment in the ICU, and scores of anxious relatives rushed to the hospital for details on their near and dear ones, with police struggling to control them.
After the flames were tamed and cooling operations launched, the horrific effects were visible with the entire ICU wards and surroundings reduced to a heap of burnt rubble.
Though the prime cause of the fire is not clear, preliminary investigations point to a suspected short-circuit.

UP: Man Beats Wife To Death In Amroha For Not Meeting Dowry Demands Of TVS Apache Bike & ₹3 Lakh Cash
Amroha: In a tragic incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha, a young woman named Meena was brutally beaten to death by her husband, Sundar, for not fulfilling his dowry demands. Sundar, a resident of Baikheda village, had been married to Meena for two years and had persistently demanded a TVS Apache bike and Rs 3 lakh as dowry. Despite repeated harassment over the dowry, Meena was unable to meet his demands, a situation she had confided to her father.
Meena had been staying at her father’s home in Soharka since the festival of Rakshabandhan, possibly seeking refuge from the abuse. Sundar continued visiting her daily, often having meals with her family, creating an appearance of normalcy.
Sundar Brought Meena Back Home, Later Killed Her
On Sunday night, he came to bring her back to his house. Once there, Sundar confronted her again about the dowry and, in a violent fit of rage, attacked her with sticks. Unable to force her compliance, he strangled her to death before fleeing the scene.
It was the local residents who first alerted the authorities to the murder. Upon hearing the devastating news, Meena’s family rushed to the police station, demanding immediate action against Sundar. Her father, Vijay Khadak Banshi, later lodged a formal complaint accusing Sundar, along with his mother, sister and four others, of involvement in the crime.
Case Filed, Manhunt Launched To Nab Accused
The police have registered a case based on the family’s complaint and are actively searching for Sundar, who remains at large. Meanwhile, Meena’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to aid in the ongoing investigation.
