TN to form Marine Elite Force to protect Olive Ridley turtles

Chennai, Feb 15: The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has decided to establish a new Marine Elite Force to prevent the deaths of Olive Ridley turtles, a vulnerable species.
This initiative comes in response to reports that over 1,308 Olive Ridley turtles have died along the Tamil Nadu coast after becoming entangled in fishing nets.
Currently, Tamil Nadu has two Marine Elite Force units that combat marine wildlife crimes such as poaching, smuggling, and illegal fishing — particularly in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere and Palk Bay.
However, the alarming rise in turtle deaths has prompted authorities to set up an additional unit to strengthen conservation efforts.
The primary cause of these turtle deaths is the use of trawl nets within five nautical miles of the coast, a practice banned under existing regulations.
The worst-affected areas include the Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Chennai coasts.
To enhance protection, the Tamil Nadu State Wildlife Board has proposed designating specific turtle congregation sites as turtle conservation reserves.
The department will also deploy volunteers to raise awareness among fishermen about sustainable fishing practices.
Authorities will enforce restrictions on artificial lights near beaches, as these can disorient hatchlings.
The forest department will ensure the periodic removal of garbage from coastal areas. The state government has also proposed procuring patrol boats for the Forest Department, allowing independent surveillance alongside the Fisheries Department.
Currently, the government allocates ₹80,000 per month for renting boats, but with hiring costs reaching ₹20,000 per boat, this approach is deemed unsustainable.
Enforcement actions have already begun, with 342 fishermen found illegally fishing within five nautical miles using trawler boats.
Of these, 208 fishermen have been chargesheeted, and their diesel subsidies worth ₹3.20 lakh have been revoked.
As part of conservation initiatives, the forest department has collected approximately 1 lakh Olive Ridley eggs from across the state.
So far, 345 eggs have hatched, with ongoing monitoring efforts in place.
The department is also working on protecting Green Turtles using telemetry technology, which helps track their movements for better conservation planning.
The Olive Ridley turtle is classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
These classifications have helped curb large-scale commercial exploitation of Olive Ridley skins.

Ahead of Sunita William’s ‘homecoming’, PM Modi pens letter to India’s illustrious daughter

New Delhi, March 18: As the NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore begin their journey back home from space, after staying ‘stranded’ at the International Space Station (ISS) for about nine months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to one of India’s most illustrious daughters hoping for her safe return.
The letter, penned by PM Modi to Sunita Williams on March 1, 2025, was shared by Minister of Minister in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh on his social media handle.
“As the whole world waits, with abated breath, for the safe return of Sunita Williams, this is how PM Modi expressed his concern for this daughter of India,” he wrote while sharing the Prime Minister’s letter to Sunita Williams.
In the heartfelt letter, PM Modi writes, “Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission.”
He also states that during his previous visits to the United States and meetings with successive US Presidents, he inquired about her well-being.
PM Modi also recalled his meeting with the leading astronaut during his previous visit to the US in 2016. He also extended an invite to Sunita Williams to visit India after returning from space.
“After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters,” he wrote.
He further wrote, “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your achievements. Recent developments have yet again showed your inspirational fortitude and perseverance.”
Dr Jitendra Singh also informed that PM Modi met former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino a few days ago and requested that this letter from him and the people of India must reach her.
“Sunita, in turn, touched by the gesture, expressed her gratitude to PM Modi and India,” he informed.

SC asks ECI to consider representation on voter turnout

New Delhi, March 18: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to examine the issue of disclosure of the authenticated record of voter turnout on its official website within 48 hours after each phase of polling in Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections.
A bench, headed by CJI Sanjiv Khanna and comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan, was dealing with a plea seeking a direction to the poll body to provide a tabulation of the constituency and polling station-wise figures of voter turnout in absolute numbers and in percentage after each phase of polling.
During the hearing, senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing on behalf of the poll body, suggested that the petitioners could meet the newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for redressal of their grievances.
In view of the ECI’s submission, the CJI Khanna-led Bench deferred the hearing and asked the poll body to examine the petitioners’ representation.
Directing the petitioners to make a representation before ECI within 10 days, the apex court posted the matter for the next hearing in the week commencing July 28.
The plea was filed against the backdrop of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the data, as published by the ECI in its press release dated April 30, 2024, showed a “sharp increase (by about 5-6 per cent) as compared to the initial percentages announced by ECI, as of 7 p.m. on the day of polling”.
“It is submitted that the inordinate delay in the release of final voter turnout data, coupled with the unusually high revision (of over 5 per cent) in the ECI’s press note of April 30, 2024, and the absence of disaggregated constituency and polling station figures in absolute numbers, has raised concerns and public suspicion regarding the correctness of the said data,” the plea said.
Referring to the voter turnout data published by the poll body on April 30, 2024, for the first two phases, after 11 days of the first phase of polling held on April 19, and 4 days after the second phase of polling held on April 26, the plea claimed “dereliction of duty” on part of the ECI in declaring election results (of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies through Electronic Voting Machines), based on accurate and indisputable data which is put in the public domain.
The application added that these apprehensions must be addressed and put to rest, and in order to uphold the voter’s confidence, it is necessary that the ECI be directed to disclose on its website scanned legible copies of Form 17C Part- I (Account of Votes Recorded) of all polling stations which contains the authenticated figures for votes polled, within 48 hours of the close of polling.
In an affidavit filed before the top court, the ECI said that disclosing the scanned legible copies of accounts of votes recorded at all polling stations would cause “chaos” in the election machinery. The poll body added that the voter turnout App continuously keeps reflecting data on a live basis, and on the other hand, Form 17C is given to agents of candidates after the close of poll on polling day itself as per the statutory requirement.

‘Conspiracy, provocation’, leaders react to Nagpur violence

New Delhi, March 18: The violence in Nagpur has drawn sharp reactions from political leaders across parties. The incident, which erupted after a protest by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal supporters, has sparked heated debates regarding its origins and motives behind it.
Shiv Sena(UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the violence, stating, “This was a planned conspiracy, executed under a well-thought-out political strategy by those who had issues with Maharashtra. This narrative, which originated in Delhi, was brought to Maharashtra and implemented. Behind this violence, there is a clear backdrop of provocation. From CM Devendra Fadnavis to his cabinet ministers, provocative statements were made.”
She further criticised the Maharashtra government, adding, “CM Devendra Fadnavis is pushing Maharashtra into underdevelopment, creating an environment where no one will want to invest in the state. Law and order have been shattered, and you are misleading and provoking the people. It is shameful that such violence took place. Nitin Gadkari himself stated that, to date, no such incident has ever occurred in Nagpur. The so-called ‘double-engine’ government they claim is actually a ‘double disaster’ government.”
Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande voicing her concern, said, “I strongly condemn this serious incident. Who started it and who spread the rumours, this is very dangerous and frightening.”
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari appealed for peace, stating, “I humbly appeal to the residents there that peace, harmony, and calm must be restored at all costs and I directly blame the Bharatiya Janata Party and its associated organisations, along with the state government, for fuelling the fire that was already burning.”
BJP leaders, too, weighed in on the incident, claiming it is a conspiracy.
BJP State President Chandrashekhar Bawankule described the violence as “unprecedented”, adding, “The unfortunate incident that occurred in Nagpur has never been seen before. The way this incident took place it is a clear case of conspiracy.”
BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay was more direct in his comments, saying, “In Nagpur, the way Hindu vehicles were set on fire, the police were attacked, and Hindus were targeted. I stand in support of every Hindu who faced atrocities. The perpetrators and those behind the conspiracy must be exposed, and actions like bulldozer operations should be taken against them.”
According to police reports, the violence erupted after VHP and Bajrang Dal supporters gathered near Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Mahal to protest against Aurangzeb’s tomb.
During the protest, they allegedly burned a photograph of Aurangzeb and a symbolic grave wrapped in a green cloth filled with grass.
This act reportedly led to rumours that sacred verses had been set on fire, which escalated tensions.
As tensions mounted, around 80-100 individuals became aggressive, hurling stones at police officers and setting vehicles on fire. Some reports even claimed that knives were thrown at security personnel. The police responded with lathi charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Authorities have since detained around 50 individuals in connection with the violence, and a heavy police force has been deployed to maintain law and order in the area.
As investigations continue, political leaders continue to weigh in, each blaming the other for the violence that has marred the peace in Nagpur.
