Mumbai Cyber Police Arrest Two For ₹10.35 Lakh ‘Digital Arrest’ Fraud Targeting Senior Citizen In Fake Money Laundering Case

Published

on

Mumbai: The North Region Cyber Police has arrested two associates of a cyber fraud gang for allegedly cheating a senior citizen by threatening him with “digital arrest” in connection with a fake money laundering case.

The arrested accused have been identified as Faraz Zakir Sharif and Aman Gam Mohiuddin Khan, residents of Andheri and Powai. During the investigation, police found that the duo had opened bank accounts in the names of bogus companies and shared the account details with cyber fraudsters to route the cheated money. Both are currently in police custody and are being interrogated.

Police have also named Sandeep Rao, Mohammad Sagir Mohammad Haroon Shaikh, Asif Mohammad Nazir Shaikh, and other unidentified persons who posed as police officers and helped receive and siphon off the defrauded money. A special operation has been launched to trace and arrest them.

The complainant, Jayesh Natwarlal Mehta (66), a resident of North Mumbai, received calls between December 12 and December 19, 2025, from individuals identifying themselves as Sandeep Rao, Vijay Khanna, and Akash Kulkarni. They falsely claimed to be senior officers and alleged that Mehta was involved in a money laundering case, warning him of imminent arrest.

The fraudsters threatened him with “digital arrest,” told him to remain confined at home, and coerced him into cooperating with their so-called investigation. Under the pretext of inquiry, they collected personal and bank details and persuaded him to transfer money to a specified bank account.

After realizing the fraud, he lodged a complaint with the North Cyber Cell Police, who registered a case under charges of cheating, impersonation, and relevant IT Act sections.

Under the guidance of Police Inspector Kiran Aher, a team comprising Assistant Police Inspectors Sandeep Panchagane and Sudarshan Patil, along with other officers, began the investigation.

Police traced the cheated amount to a bank account in Bengaluru, from where the money was further transferred to four different accounts. These accounts were also found linked to other cyber fraud cases. Fourteen cyber cells across various states froze the accounts during the probe.

Technical analysis of the mobile number and IMEI used to open the accounts showed activity near Royal Palms, Aarey, and Goregaon, leading police to detain Faraz Shaikh and Aman Khan for questioning.

Police seized three mobile phones, a laptop, bogus company stamp papers, multiple debit cards, and other incriminating materials from the accused. Around ₹5 lakh from fraud proceeds had been routed through their accounts, which they later handed over to the cyber fraudsters.

Investigations revealed that the duo regularly stayed in contact with cyber criminals and opened fake company accounts on their instructions in exchange for commission. Following the findings, both were arrested. During interrogation, the names of several more suspects surfaced. Police have launched a special drive to arrest them.

Mumbai: Seven families duped of Rs 68.5 Lakh in govt job scam; cops launch hunt

Mumbai, July 31: Seven families were cheated of Rs 68.50 lakh on the promise of securing government jobs for their children, with the accused claiming to have influential contacts in the Maharashtra Mantralaya (State Secretariat). The Azad Maidan Police have registered a fraud case and launched a search for the accused.

According to Mumbai Police, a major fraud involving the collection of lakhs of rupees from multiple families under the pretext of providing government employment has come to light in the city. Acting on complaints filed by the victims, the Azad Maidan Police have booked two accused persons for cheating and criminal breach of trust.

Among the victims is a retired Sister-in-Charge from GT Hospital. Police said the accused collectively swindled Rs 68.50 lakh from seven families over several years by promising government jobs.

Investigators revealed that the scam dates back to 2014. The complainant was searching for employment opportunities for her son when Suryakant Nivrutti Magre, a neighbour and colleague residing in the GT Hospital staff quarters, approached her with an offer. Magre allegedly claimed that his relative, Yogesh Jagannath Patankar, worked at the Mantralaya and had considerable influence in securing government appointments.

The accused promised to obtain a Senior Clerk position in a government department for the complainant’s son and demanded Rs 5 lakh in return. Trusting Magre because of their professional and personal association, the complainant paid the amount in instalments between April and December 2014. Police said she even mortgaged her jewellery to arrange the money.

After receiving the payment, the accused allegedly continued delaying the appointment process. On December 10, 2019, the complainant’s son was sent to a Primary Health Centre in Khalapur for what was described as a mandatory medical examination. Upon reaching the centre, the family discovered that several other candidates and their parents had also been called for similar tests.

However, no appointment letters were issued. The accused allegedly continued making excuses, citing administrative delays and later the COVID-19 pandemic. As years passed without any progress, the victims realised they had been cheated.

Further investigation revealed that six other families had fallen victim to the same scheme, resulting in a total loss of Rs 68.50 lakh. The Azad Maidan Police have recorded statements from the victims and intensified efforts to trace and arrest the accused.

Maharashtra cyber police register FIR over AI-generated videos targeting PM Modi, Piyush Goyal

Mumbai, July 31: Maharashtra Cyber Police have registered an FIR regarding the circulation of allegedly AI-generated and morphed videos of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The action was initiated following a complaint filed by a BJP social media office-bearer.

According to officials, the Maharashtra Nodal Cyber Police have registered a case against unidentified individuals and launched an investigation into the matter. The FIR has been filed under Sections 318(2), 336, 352, 353(1), 353(2), 356(1), and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act.

The complainant alleged that during recent student protests, morphed or AI-generated videos of Union Minister Piyush Goyal were circulated through various social media accounts. He further claimed that objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also shared online.

According to the complaint, a video was posted from a Facebook account named “Maharashtra Dharma” with a caption claiming that Piyush Goyal had spoken about publicly hanging the protesters, referring to them as “cockroaches”.

The complainant alleged that the minister appeared to be making objectionable remarks in the circulated clip. However, after comparing it with the original video released by a news agency, he concluded that the video had allegedly been digitally manipulated or created using artificial intelligence.

The complainant also highlighted several other social media posts, including an allegedly morphed image of Prime Minister Modi shared through a Facebook account, an objectionable video circulated on Instagram, and another video containing abusive language directed at the Prime Minister.

According to the complaint, the content was circulated with the intention of spreading misinformation, provoking public discontent, and insulting individuals holding constitutional positions.

Police officials said efforts are underway to identify and trace the operators of the social media accounts involved. Further investigation into the case is in progress.

Rs 28 crore, 15 kg gold seized in Bengal Police raid; relative of Tulu Mondal arrested

Published

Kolkata, July 30: After almost 24 hours of marathon raids and search operations coupled with interrogation, the Birbhum District Police in West Bengal on Thursday arrested Minar Mondal, a relative of Tulu Mondal, an influential stone-quarry owner in the district.

Following the marathon operations that started on Wednesday afternoon, the police recovered huge unaccounted cash and gold from Minar’s residence. The cops brought currency-counting machines from a local bank branch to count the cash seized.

The counting and recounting of the cash recovered was completed on Thursday morning; the total cash seizure had been found to be a little over Rs 28 crore, said a member of the investigating team.

Apart from that, he added, 15 kilograms of gold, whose estimated market value is over Rs 21 crore, have been seized from Minar’s residence.

“The estimated value of the seized cash and gold would be to the tune of around Rs 50 crore,” he added.

On Thursday morning, Minar was formally arrested, and the cops first took him to a local police station. At the same time, the police left his residence with a couple of trunks filled with seized cash and gold.

Minar will be presented to a district court in Suri later in the day, and the public prosecutor will seek his police custody.

Initially, Minar refused to answer repeated queries from the cops about the sources of such huge cash and gold. However, he finally admitted that the money and gold recovered were sourced from a syndicated crime racket, confirmed Birbhum’s district police Superintendent, Bidit Raj Bundesh.

According to police sources, last Tuesday, officials of Mohammad Bazar police station in Birbhum arrested seven dacoits. Based on the information from that dacoits’ group, the investigators found the location of the money and gold ‘mine’ in the house of Minar. Accordingly, the raids and search operations started at Minar’s residence on Wednesday afternoon, which continued till Thursday morning.

It is learnt that Minar was a bus driver in the state-run transport corporation. However, locals said he was involved in a major way with the stone-quarry business of Tulu Mondal, who again was a close confidant of Anubrata Mondal, the former Trinamool Congress district president in Birbhum.

The recovery of such a huge amount of cash and gold from his residence this morning has left his neighbours dumbstruck. In the past, the stone-quarry owner, Tulu Mondal, was accused of illegal stone mining.

Tulu Mondal’s name had also come up in the cattle smuggling case. He was under the watch of the ED in 2022. At that time, the Central investigators raided his house and office. The investigators are trying to find whether the huge cash and gold recovered from Minar Mondal’s residence were actually owned by Tulu Mondal.
