Delhi Police arrest 2 for stealing money through ATM tampering
New Delhi, Sep 18: The Delhi Police have arrested two accused for tampering with the cash-dispensing mechanism of ATMs, officials said on Friday.
The accused have been identified as Aman and Suraj. Both of them are in their twenties and hail from Uttar Pradesh.
According to the investigators, the accused were previously employed at ‘HITACHI’ as custodians and were responsible for depositing and withdrawing the cash from the ATM machines of Axis Bank. While working at the company, they gained knowledge about the working of the ATMs and the loopholes in the machines
An official statement said that on September 15, a team of Special Staff, Central District, received specific secret information that Aman and Suraj would arrive near Mirdard Wali Gali, Tagore Road, behind Civic Centre, Delhi, on a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle.
Upon receiving the tip, a dedicated team was constituted under the leadership of Inspector Sandeep Yadav, I/C Special Staff, Central District, comprising SI Vijay, SI Satish, SI Naresh, HC Manish, HC Munesh, HC Mohit, HC Vikas, HC Deepak, HC Inderjeet, HC Hariom, HC Heera Lal, Ct. Surajpal, Ct. Jayant, Ct. Sumit and Ct. Ajay, under the overall supervision of ACP Operations, Central District, Delhi, Padam Singh Rana.
Acting on the information, the team laid a trap near the rear side of the MCD Building, in front of Reliance Building, Tagore Road, Kamla Market in Delhi.
At about 11:20 p.m., two persons approached from the Gandhi Market side on a motorcycle. The secret informer identified them as the persons mentioned in the information. When the police team signaled them to stop, both attempted to flee. After a brief chase, both accused were apprehended along with the vehicle.
Police recovered one illegal country-made pistol and two live cartridges while searching Suraj. During the frisking of Aman, three live cartridges were recovered.
Accordingly, FIR No. 288/2026 dated 16.09.2026 under Sections 25/54/59 Arms Act, PS Kamla Market, Central District, Delhi, was registered.
Officials said during sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed that they targeted ATMs during relatively less crowded hours and on Saturdays and Sundays, particularly when security guards were not present.
According to investigators, the accused allegedly misused their familiarity with the functioning of ATMs. While working at the company, they had learnt the whole process of tampering with ATMs and withdrawing cash from machines illegally.
The accused allegedly got the keys of the targeted ATM machines from their earlier associate to gain access, tamper with the cash-dispensing mechanism and place rubber rings to create an obstruction. Thereafter, they would close the machine and leave the spot, officials said.
Subsequently, when a genuine customer entered the ATM, inserted or swiped their ATM card and entered the PIN and other required details for a cash withdrawal, the transaction would be processed. However, due to the obstruction created inside the cash-dispensing mechanism, the cash would not come out through the normal dispensing outlet and would instead remain trapped inside the ATM’s internal dispensing area/tray.
The customer, believing that the cash had not been dispensed, would leave the ATM booth. The accused would then return to the ATM, opened the machine with the help of the keys already available with them and retrieve the cash that had remained trapped inside the ATM.
The accused disclosed during interrogation that they had adopted this modus operandi at multiple ATMs of Axis Bank in Sector 4–5, Gurugram, as well as at ICICI Bank ATMs in Kapashera and nearby areas of Delhi.
Further investigation is underway where the investigators are contacting the concerned police stations in these areas to ascertain whether any FIRs have been registered in connection with similar incidents.

Week after Supernova suicide, 36-year-old man dies after fall from 12th floor of Greater Noida West society

Greater Noida, Oct 9: Nearly a week after a young man jumped to his death from the 43rd floor of Noida’s Supernova building in Sector 94, sending shockwaves in the area, a 36-year-old man died after falling from the 12th floor of a residential society in Greater Noida West on Friday, with his family telling police that he had been struggling with depression, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Anil Kumar, son of Santosh Kumar, a resident of Ace Divino Society under the Bisrakh police station limits. He originally hailed from Prithvipur village in Madhya Pradesh’s Niwari district.
According to police, they received information about the incident on Friday and sent a team to the spot. The personnel gathered details about the incident and completed the identification process.
Police subsequently took custody of the body, completed the inquest proceedings and sent it for post-mortem examination.
During preliminary enquiries, the deceased’s family told police that Kumar had been experiencing depression for some time. However, police are still examining the circumstances leading to the incident, and the family’s statement alone does not establish the cause of the fall.
Police said further legal formalities were underway. More details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses and the post-mortem examination is completed.
Earlier, on October 3, Sambhav Jain jumped from the 43rd floor of Noida’s Supernova building in Sector 94. The 29-year-old man was a resident of Manesar in Haryana’s Gurugram.
Meanwhile, according to preliminary information received earlier, the impact of the fall was such that the victim’s body was severed into two pieces. A sound resembling a bomb blast was reportedly heard in the complex due to the impact of the fall.
According to reports, the young man who committed suicide was staying at Supernova’s AIR BNB and committed suicide as he was depressed after his divorce and his baby’s illness that had resulted in mounting medical bills.
In another case of suicide reported last month, a first-year MCA student hanged himself in his room in Sector Alpha-2, under the jurisdiction of the Beta-2 Police Station in Greater Noida.
He had reportedly moved to Noida about a month prior to the incident and was pursuing his first-year MCA course through online classes.

PACL investment fraud: ED attaches properties worth Rs 567 crore in Mumbai, Pune

Mumbai, Oct 8: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached immovable properties in Mumbai, Pune and Raigad (Maharashtra) worth Rs 567.45 crore in connection with a Rs 48,000 crore collective investment scheme operated by Pearls Agrotech Corporation Limited (PACL) for development of farm land, an official said on Thursday.
The PACL’s properties were attached by ED’s Delhi Zonal Office under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
The ED has attached 48 immovable properties held in the names of Prateek Kumar, Ansh Prateek Kumar, and entities namely Beaming Infradevelopers, Ganraj Properties, and Greenfield Estates Limited, having a current market value of Rs 567.45 crore.
With this attachment, the ED has so far attached movable and immovable properties worth around Rs 30,235.21 crore, including assets located in India and abroad.
The ED’s investigation was initiated on the basis of an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi under Sections 120-B and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, dealing with conspiracy and cheating.
Subsequently, the CBI filed a charge sheet and a supplementary charge sheet against 33 accused for their role in running an illegal investment scheme.
According to the charge sheets, the accused entities and individuals operated a massive illegal collective investment scheme, fraudulently mobilising more than Rs 48,000 crore from lakhs of investors across India under the pretext of sale and development of agricultural land.
Investors were induced to invest through cash down payment and instalment payment plans and were made to sign misleading documents such as agreements, powers of attorney and other instruments.
“In most cases, land was never delivered, resulting in unpaid investor dues of around Rs 48,000 crore,” the ED said.
The ED recorded an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in the case in 2016 and filed a charge sheet in 2018, followed by six supplementary charge sheets in 2022, 2025 and 2026 against the various accused.
“Prateek Kumar was arraigned as an accused (A-13) in the First Supplementary charge sheet dated August 20, 2022, filed in the case immediately, where cognisance was taken by the Special Court vide order dated September 19, 2022,” the ED added.
Subsequently, an open-ended Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) was issued against Prateek Kumar by the Special Court on April 9, 2025.
These entities are beneficially owned and controlled by Prateek Kumar.
The investigation revealed that these immovable properties were purchased using funds diverted from PACL, which had originally collected money from gullible investors, thereby constituting proceeds of crime.

Kanpur woman given triple talaq after 16 years of marriage, demands husband arrest

Kanpur, Oct 8: A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur has accused her husband of giving her triple talaq and said on Thursday that she was ousted from their family home after 16 years of marriage and two children. The victim has alleged that her husband was having an affair with a woman living in the same area.
The woman named Afreen has claimed that she caught her husband red-handed cheating on her on July 7 with another woman.
“It has happened multiple times. I have tried to explain and communicate many times; he didn’t agree. Even when I caught him that day, we got into a huge fight. All the relatives were called. When confronted, he said that ‘she is everything to me; I will divorce you. I will stay with her; I will marry her,'” she said, quoting her husband.
The woman also alleged that she was physically abused.
“He used to torment the children and me. He used to beat me up and did not provide for me. I was physically abused, but I persevered through it, thinking that it should not affect my family, my children.”
She said that she was married for 16 years and has two teenage children.
“I have been married for 16 years, and I have two sons. One is 13; the other is 15. His husband’s family did not take any action and just asked me to wait and have patience. I did too, thinking my family would be torn apart,” Afreen added.
According to the woman, at around 9:30 p.m. on August 12, her husband pronounced triple talaq in front of their two sons and threw her out of the house. She subsequently lodged a complaint at Chaman Ganj police station.
Police have registered an FIR under provisions related to dowry harassment, assault, an illicit relationship, and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.
Speaking on the matter, Kanpur Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Central), Atul Srivastava, said, “An FIR has been registered in the Chamanganj police station against the accused. Investigations are ongoing in the matter.”
Incidentally, the woman complained that her initial complaints were not being registered by the police, and the FIR was only filed recently in October.
However, when asked, the DCP said mediation was initially being attempted in the matter. After the issue of triple talaq came to light, an FIR was registered immediately.
The woman demanded that her husband should be arrested as soon as possible.
