Mumbai Metro 2B: Yellow Line Connecting Andheri To Mankhurd Nears Completion; Check Progress Of Mega Project That Costs Nearly ₹11,000 Cr

on

Mumbai: Mumbai’s metro network is preparing for a major leap with the nearing completion of Metro Line 2B, also known as the Yellow Line. Stretching over 23.64 km from D. N. Nagar in Andheri to Mandale in Mankhurd, the fully elevated corridor will feature 20 stations, improving east-west connectivity across some of the city’s busiest residential and commercial hubs, including Bandra, Kurla, Chembur and Mankhurd.

With an estimated project cost of Rs 10,986 crore, the new corridor is expected to dramatically reduce commute times and decongest major roads, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters. The project, once fully operational, will enable faster, safer and more comfortable public transport while linking critical zones across Mumbai.

Details On Mega Project’s Progress

As of mid-2025, civil work on Metro Line 2B is progressing steadily, with 78 per cent to 83 per cent of the overall construction completed. key milestones include 98 per cent completion of pile caps, 92 per cent of pier work and nearly 87 per cent of girder installation. The Mandale depot, spread over 31 hectares, is 98 per cent complete and will serve as the main hub for stabling and maintaining trains.

Phase 1 of the corridor, spanning 5.4 km from Mandale to Diamond Garden and covering five stations, has already seen trial runs begin in April 2025. Authorities are aiming to open this stretch to the public by the end of the year, while full commissioning of the entire corridor is planned in stages between 2026 and 2027.

Metro Line 2B will run modern six-coach trains manufactured by BEML. These trains come equipped with regenerative braking, onboard CCTV cameras and mobile charging points. Out of 96 trains sanctioned for the Mumbai Metro network through funding from ADB and NDB, 60 have been delivered, with many designated for Line 2B.

Project To Ease East-West Connectivity

Designed for a daily ridership of over 10 lakh passengers by 2031, the corridor is expected to cut travel times by 50–75 per cent, depending on traffic conditions. Interchange stations at key junctions will provide smooth connectivity with other metro lines, suburban railways, the monorail and even the proposed Airport Rail Link.

Besides easing congestion, the Yellow Line will promote public transport over private vehicles, potentially reducing pollution and improving road safety. The project is a major step toward integrated urban mobility, enhancing accessibility to commercial, industrial and residential areas across the city.
