Over 200 4G smartphones now support Airtel VoLTE



Over 200 popular 4G-enabled smartphones now support its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services, enabling users to experience HD quality voice calling and fast data speed, Bharti Airtel said on Monday.

“Users of the best-selling 4G smartphones from major brands like OPPO, Vivo, Apple, Samsung, OnePlus, Nokia, Panasonic, Xiaomi, Karbonn, Lava and Panasonic can now converse on the HD quality voice calling offered on Airtel VoLTE,” said the company.

Airtel said it has been ramping up its 4G capacity across the country to serve the fast-growing customer demand for high-speed data.

In case of non-availability of 4G network, Airtel VoLTE calls fall back on 3G/2G network to ensure that customers continue to stay connected at all times.


India’s PSLV rocket lifts-off with radar imaging satellite




India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C49) rocket carrying radar imaging earth observation satellite EOS-01 (formerly RISAT-2BR2) and nine foreign satellites lifted off from the rocket port at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.

The rocket with 10 satellites lifted-off from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota at 3.02 p.m.

The primary passenger of the 44.5 metre tall PSLV-C49 will be the Indian radar imaging satellite EOS-01 (formerly RISAT-2BR2) with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that can shoot pictures in all weather conditions.

The satellite can take pictures day and night and will be useful for surveillance as well as civilian activities.

According to ISRO, EOS-01, is a 630 kg earth observation satellite, intended for applications in agriculture, forestry and disaster management support.

The nine foreign satellites piggybacking are from: Lithuania (1-R2, technology demonstrator), Luxembourg (4 maritime application satellites by Kleos Space) and the US (4-Lemur multi mission remote sensing satellites).

The PSLV in normal configuration is a four stage/engine expendable rocket powered by solid and liquid fuels alternatively. Six booster motors will also be strapped on to the first stage to give higher thrust during the initial flight moments.

But the 44.4 metre tall PSLV rocket that flew on Saturday was the DL variant having only two strap-booster motors. The lift off weight of the rocket is 259 ton.

This rocket variant was used the first time to put the Microsat R satellite into orbit on January 24, 2019.

The Indian space agency has PSLV variants with two and four strap-on motors, larger PSLV-XL and the Core Alone variant without any strap-on motors.

The choice of the rocket to be used for a mission depends on the weight of the satellite and the orbit where the satellite has to be orbited.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Z Fold2 in biggest, boldest design yet




Unveiling a completely new form factor in the world of foldable smartphones, Samsung on Tuesday introduced its third foldable device called Galaxy Z Fold2 that sports a 6.2-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main screen when unfolded.

Galaxy Z Fold2 will be available in two memory variants — 12GB RAM+512GB and 12GB RAM+256GB internal storage – beginning with select markets, the company said in a statement.

The device in Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze colours will be available in around 40 markets, including the US and South Korea, on September 18 while pre-orders will begin from September 1.

The device will arrive in India this month and the price and availability will be announced at a later date.

“With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2, we closely listened to user feedback to ensure we were bringing meaningful improvements to the hardware, while also developing new innovations to enhance the user experience,” said Dr TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.

Galaxy Z Fold2 is Samsung’s third foldable smartphone after Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip.

The new device has a 10MP selfie camera and the rear camera system has three sensors — a 12MP Ultra Wide camera, a 12MP Wide-Angle camera and a 12MP Telephoto Camera along with up to 10X zoom.

The device runs Android 10 and houses a 4,500mAh battery along with fast-charging technology. It has one eSIM and one nano-SIM slot.

The device offers ‘Samsung Ultra Thin Glass’ on the 7.6-inch main screen, providing amore premium and refined feel for the display. The device features the Flex Mode, allowing it to be used in halfway-open configurations like the Galaxy Z Flip.

It has minimised bezels and notch-less front camera and offers a 120Hz adaptable refresh rate for smooth scrolling and gaming.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 comes with the best dynamic sound available on a Galaxy device to date, the company said, with enhanced stereo effect and clearer sound provided by high-dynamic dual speakers.

The design is anchored by the ‘Hideaway Hinge’ which fits seamlessly into the device body and enables free standing capabilities.

Galaxy Z Fold2 also employs sweeper technology, first introduced on the Galaxy Z Flip, within the gap between the body and hinge housing to repel dust and undesirable particles.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 pairs the ‘Flex Mode’ with ‘App Continuity’ feature to provide expanded usability, crossing the boundary between the Cover and Main Screen.

The device can record hands-free video and keep the subject in focus even when it moves.

It offers a unique functionality where both the photographer and the subject can clearly see what is going on during the shot.

“Using the main and cover screen at the same time with ‘Dual Preview’, both parties can see what’s being captured,” the company said.

Like the newly-launched Galaxy Note20 series, Samsung offers next-gen productivity tools with Microsoft on this foldable device too.

Tripura scientist makes robot to take care of Corona patients





A scientist from Tripura University has made a robot from locally available and scrap materials to assist the front-line health workers, including doctors, to take care of the coronavirus patients from a distant place. The remote-controlled robot can carry 10-15 kilograms of materials, has an operational range of 15-20 meters, and can deliver food, medicines, and other essential items to the COVID-19 patients.

“I have just spent Rs 25,000 and took a week’s time to make the robot. Due to the ongoing lockdown, I could not collect the latest and modern devices and tools from outside Tripura, hence I have to depend on the local and scrap materials. I used the vital receiver of the robot from an old toy of a son of my relative,” scientist Harjeet Nath told IANS on Tuesday.

Nath, who received the prestigious young scientist award in 2018, said that the robot can be of enormous help to the doctors, nurses and other health workers to deal with the patients of the highly contagious nCoV.

An assistant professor of the Chemical and Polymer Engineering Department of the Tripura University, a central varsity, the 32-year-old scientist said that the robot, regulated by a transmitter and a receiver, can work for around 90 minutes after the lead-acid rechargeable battery (135 watts) is given five hour’s charge.

In the robot, Nath has installed a two-way communication device of a Wi-Fi-controlled camera with an inbuilt microphone and speaker to help both the doctors or nurses and patients to communicate directly with each other maintaining the safest distance.

A resident of southern Assam, the enterprising researcher had earlier developed the first of its kind portable water purifier in the country, which can benefit people during calamities like floods and also reduce pollution.

He said that as the frontline health workers including the doctors and nurses are at the risk of getting infected with the highly infectious virus as they have to closely take care of the COVID-19 patients.

“In India and abroad many doctors, nurses, and health workers were already infected by the dreaded virus. The robot would reduce the risk for the frontline warriors to a large extent,” he said.

Nath, who was a research scholar at the IIT-Guwahati, said that he can add many more skills including thermal screening of suspected patients, sanitizing the hospital floors to the existing robot to make the machine many more other health-related jobs besides purposeful.
