Filmmaker Dinesh Vijan: OTT, satellite rights have reduced risks for producers

Bollywood filmmaker Dinesh Vijan has bank-rolled films such as Badlapur, Bala and Stree among many others. The filmmaker agrees with the advent of digital and satellite rights, the risk factor for a producer incurring losses has reduced.

“Digital is a significant contributor but the difference for me is that the audience chooses to go to a theatre and watch a film, so it is a more challenging or daunting task to do — because you need to engage your viewer to come and watch and like film,” Vijan said.

He firmly believes that a “true perception” of a film comes with its theatrical release.

“It’s a very reactive medium but, yes, with the advent of new avenues, digital and satellite takeaway comprise a considerable amount of your risk even if you go theatrical. But if it runs in theatres there are so many years of legacy that stays,” he said.

Vijan’s latest production venture is Roohi, which released theatrically on March 11. Trade analysts had earlier shared that theatre releases are just a formality and films will make a move after a theatre run on OTT platforms, courtesy the pandemic.

The producer begs to differ.

“We could have gone digital last year and yes, there would be a lot of upfront money for it but the idea is that we waited for it and came into theatres properly. We have promoted the film, music. Everyone’s aware that the film is coming,” he said.

Vijan added: “Maybe what they meant was some films are coming as formality to go to digital later but this film has a clean run in theatres, has been promoted. We are going very wide with it. So, this is not a formality.”

Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez has been named as an accused in the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) supplementary charge sheet filed in the Rs 200 crore money laundering case involving conman Sukesh Chandrashekar, claim sources.

The ED is likely to file a second supplementary prosecution complaint against the actress before the Patiala House Court on Wednesday.

Jacqueline and Nora Fatehi, also a Bollywood actress, have already recorded their statement as witness in the case.

Earlier, fixed deposits worth Rs 7.2 crore belonging to Jacqueline were attached by the ED.

The probe agency termed these gifts and properties as proceeds of crime received by the actress.

In February, the ED had filed its first supplementary prosecution complaint against Pinky Irani, an alleged aide to Chandrashekhar who introduced him to the actresses.

It was alleged in the charge sheet that Pinky used to choose costly gifts for Jacqueline and later used to drop it at her house after the payments were made by Chandrashekhar.

In December last year, the ED had filed the first charge sheet in this matter before the court of Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh.

Chandrashekhar has allegedly spent around 20 crore on different models and Bollywood celebs. A few had refused to take gifts from him.

According to an excerpt from the charge sheet, Jacqueline says she did receive expensive gifts from Sukesh and that he had also purchased a horse “Espuela”.

The actress further claimed that he had bought a luxury car for her but she returned it
