Amid the growing demand to boycott Chinese products in the wake of India-China stand-off, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious programme — Make in India, saying imports from China after 2014 have actually increased.
“Facts don’t lie. BJP says: Make in India. BJP does: Buy from China,” Rahul Gandhi said in a sharp tweet attaching a graphics of the percentage of imports from China during the UPA rule and the NDA government.
The graphics showed that from 2008 to 2014, the imports from China were below 14 per cent, while during the BJP-led NDA rule, the Chinese import increased to over 18 per cent.
The graphics also depicted that in 2008 under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the imports from China were at 12 per cent while it rose to 14 per cent in 2012 but again came down to 13 per cent in 2014.
While under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the imports from China grew from 13 per cent to 14 per cent in 2015, to 16 per cent in 2016, to 17 per cent in 2017 and to 18 per cent in 2018, the graphics attached by Rahul Gandhi showed.
Swadeshi doesn’t means boycotting foreign goods: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat
Speaking about Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasised on the need for a third model of development and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about self-reliant India on this basis itself.
While releaseing two books written by Prof Rajendra Gupta on Wednesday, RSS chief also talke about swadeshi abhiyan and boycotting of foreign goods. He clearly said that swadeshi doesn’t means boycotting of foreign goods but we should buy them on our own terms.
He also stressed on the new development model during the corona times. He said the kind of economic policies which were needed after the independence were not drafted. The country adopted the Western model.
However, he expressed satisfaction with the efforts which are now being made in this direction.
Bhagwat said that earlier in one of the model it was said that man has the power while in another it was said that society has the power. The idea was that the world should become a global market but now under the new circumstances due to Covid-19, there is the need of the third mode which is based on values.
