A prominent Maharashtra Congress leader on Monday urged the state government to permit the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebrations with suitable Covid-19 restrictions.
The plea came in a memorandum to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, state Congress chief and Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat and NCP’s Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, submitted by former minister Arif Naseem Khan.
Khan said that Eid al-Adha is one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar and obligatory upon the Muslim faithful to perform the sacrifice of goats.
“Just as the government has permitted the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival with stringent conditions, we appeal to you to let the Muslim community also celebrate Eid al-Adha with appropriate restrictions,” Khan said.
He said that since the festival is due to be celebrated on August 1, but so far, the state government has not taken any decision in the matter which has unnerved the Muslim community and leaders of various organisations.
Khan called upon Thackeray to take a decision in the matter on priority which could enable the community to celebrate Eid al-Adha with due restrictions.
Incidentally, in May, the Muslim community in Mumbai and Maharashtra had celebrated Eid ul-Fitr virtually remaining at home as the Covid-19 pandemic raged, and even the world-famous Mohammed Ali Road food bazaar remained shut for the first time in its 250-year-old history.

They will decide.
‘I am calm, sober, But this does not mean I am naive and thus our family members are under attack. This method is not from Maharashtra. Absolutely not. Is a Culture. HC raps BMC, orders compensation for demolition at Kangana Ranaut’s bungalow
In a major relief for Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, the Bombay High Court on Friday quashed the BMC’s demolition notice and subsequent action to undertake partial demolition at her Bandra bungalow in September, and ordered suitable compensation to her.
A Division Bench comprising Justices SJ Kathawalla and RI Chagla said that Ranaut can take steps to get regularised her property and make it habitable. The court directed that if Ranaut makes an application for getting her building plans approved, it would be decided within 4 weeks.
Reserving its order on the quantum of compensation payable to the actress, the court appointed a valuer to decide on the compensation amount.
The court said that the BMC proceeded on “wrongful grounds” in the case that was against the citizens’ rights, a malice in law and reactionary in nature.
Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that she would comment after consulting the BMC Legal Department but declined to say whether it would challenge the High Court ruling in the Supreme Court.
The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party leaders like Kirit Somaiya and Ram Kadam welcomed the court verdict and slammed the BMC, Municipal Commissioner IS Chahal, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Maha Vikas Aghadi government, saying it was a big blow to them and demanded the Mayor’s resignation.
A BMC team had undertaken partial demolition at Ranaut’s bungalow on September 9, which sparked off massive political furore after which she moved the Bombay HC to challenge the civic body’s move, terming it vendetta.
