Actor Rajkummar Rao: Audiences want to see real characters

Actor Rajkummar Rao once again plays a relatable character in his upcoming film, Chhalaang, and says there is a demand for stories with real characters.

In the Hansal Mehta-directed social comedy set in Haryana, he portrays the role of a PT teacher who initially doesn’t take sports too seriously.

“I was into sports. I did my schooling in Haryana, so I could relate to it. The PT teacher’s accent… there is a lot of nostalgia and fun,” said the actor.

“Audiences want to see real characters. That’s why new generation writers and filmmakers are making films about real people and cultures. You must have seen a guy like Montu (his character inthe film) in real life. There is a demand for such stories,” he added.

Through the film, he hopes people understand the importance of physical training.

“School has many opportunities. Education is important, but physical fitness is also important, especially in today’s time,” said the actor.

“Chhalaang” reunites Rajkummar with director Hansal Mehta. “It is such a pleasure to work with Hansal sir. It is truly special. Our first meeting was in 2011 and there was an instant connection. Since then we have been working together. I adore him,” said Rajkummar.

“Working with Hansal sir on this film was different. It is not one of the serious dramas. Hansal sir understands humour well,” added the actor, who has delivered heavy-duty performances in serious Hansal Mehta directorials as “Shahid”, “CityLights”, and “Aligarh”.

Produced by Ajay Devgn, Luv Ranjan, Ankur Garg, the film also stars Nushrratt Bharuccha, Saurabh Shukla, Satish Kaushik, Zeeshan Ayyub, Ila Arun and Jatin Sarna.

“The film is with children and about children, which adults can also enjoy,” said Ranjan, who feels that they have explored something different in “Chhalaang”.

“Sports films generally have national teams and big events, but what about their origin? That begins in schools. We have seen movies on coaches and players, but not a PT master. Introduction to sports always happens through a PT master. That’s where the idea came from,” he shared.

The film releases on the eve of Children’s Day, on November 13, on Amazon Prime Video.

Singer Darshan Raval says lockdown gave him time to cut an album

Singer Darshan Raval has grown a lot as an artiste since his participation in a reality show back in 2014. After singing for multiple Bollywood films and singles, he is now ready to treat his fans with his debut album.

Darshan became the audience favourite when he participated in “India’s Raw Star”. He went on to sing for films like “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo”, “Teraa Surroor”, “Loveyatri” and “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga”. He has been active in the independent music space, too.

“Working on one single song is different and working on one entire album, an entire journey, an entire story, is very different. Every artise dreams of doing an album. I never got the time to work on so many songs together. Album needs a lot of time, a lot of dedication and a lot of hardwork. Not only me, the entire team has to do that,” Darshan told IANS.

Lack of time was keeping him away from working on an album, and the lockdown gave him the opportunity.

“I wanted to do an album since the last five years, but I think this was the time I could achieve this dream,” he said.

He had made a few songs during lockdown.

“It has been quite a journey. ‘Judaiyaan’ is about separation and right now, we are seperated from everyone and everybody we love and everything we love and love to do. So that was the inspiration behind ‘Judaiyaan’,” Darshan explained about the title song of his upcoming album.

Darshan has recorded the song with Shreya Ghosal.

“When I made the first song ‘Judaiyaan’, the title song, and the first line was composed, I thought of Shreya Ghosal. I thought that if she would sing the song, it would become more beautiful. I’m very happy she loved the song and she sung it with all her heart,” he said about the newly released track.

It also has a reprise version.

“If there are two versions, there are two stories, two sides to the story and my fans have always loved that. They have a separate love for the reprise versions I do. Also, a reprise version has always been a good luck charm for me. Whenever I do a reprise version, it connects very well with fans,” said the singer.

He enjoys juggling between film and non-film songs and keeping himself busy, but the thought of giving up never came to him.

“I get tired of doing anything monotonous — like performing everyday for months and doing music sometimes. It’s tiring, but I never feel like quitting because since childhood I dreamt of doing music,” said Darshan.

“Sometimes it is monotonous, but I think every artiste has his timeout like he gets to travel. I love to travel, so I spend time with my friends. Travel relaxes me and brings me back in the mood so that I can work more,” he added.

Young actress Ananya Panday says she enjoys learning and wants to be a student for life.

Ananya made her debut with “Student Of The Year 2” in 2019, and went on to star in “Pati Patni Aur Woh” and “Khaali Peeli”.

Talking about her journey as an actor so far, Ananya shared: “Every experience has been just so enriching and individually, a journey of a lifetime. I truly enjoy learning and I want to be a student for life. I want to experiment and grow with everything that I do and I definitely don’t want to get stuck in a zone or stay stagnant.”

“Starting from Shreya (her character in ‘Student Of The Year 2’) being a force to reckon with and up to Pooja (‘Khaali Peeli’), who as a character is completely out of my comfort zone, all characters that I have had the chance to play have been extremely different from each other yet, and each has acted as a catalyst in broadening my horizon,” she added.

The actress has two projects in the pipeline — Shakun Batra’s untitled film co-starring Deepika Padukone and Siddhant Chaturvedi, and “Fighter” alongside Vijay Deverakonda.

“Taking all those learnings forward, I’m so excited for Shakun’s film and Puri Jagannath sir’s film, both because yet again, these projects are so different from each other and anything I’ve done before and would bring out a different side of me, different characters and bring different experiences”, she said.

Currently, Ananya is shooting for Batra’s film in Goa.
