Review nullah cleaning works, says SP MLA Rais Shaikh to BMC

  • Flooding likely in Mumbai due to incomplete nullah cleaning, says Shaikh
  • Since BMC officers and employees engaged in elections duties, the nullah cleaning works have not been carried out properly
  • Severe action must be taken against contractors for laxity and negligence

Mumbai: Ahead of the monsoon season, Samajwadi Party legislator Rais Shaikh has demanded a thorough review of the nullah cleaning works in the city and severe action against the contractors for their laxity and failure to carry out the works properly. Shaikh wrote a letter to BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani on the issue on Wednesday.

In his letter to the civic chief, Shaikh stated that a large number of BMC officers and employees were engaged in election duties during the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

“As a result, the annual pre-monsoon nullah cleaning works have not been carried out properly. Hence, there is a fear of potential waterlogging incidents in the city during the monsoon. I urge the civic administration to carry out an extensive review of nullah cleaning works and take severe action against the contractors responsible for irregularities and negligence in the works,” said Shaikh.

Shaikh further said that the India Meteorological Department has predicted above-normal rainfall this year. “Therefore, the civic administration needs to be more vigilant about waterlogging. Since the civic employees and officers were busy with election duties, there was laxity and irregularities in the desilting work,” he added.

The SP legislator further demanded that the BMC must carry out a detailed review of the current status of the pumping station works in the city. “BMC must make this information public for the citizens to reassure them about the BMC’s work,” he added.
